Nebraska law enforcement agencies are fighting to protect people from the damage drugs can do to their lives. It is a difficult battle, and often police are not certain exactly who the enemy is. This is why arrests for drug charges, while applauded, may also be met with suspicion. The criminal defense of some who are accused of drug crimes may reveal that their rights were violated by police zealous to fight the drug war.
Recently, U.S. Customs and Border Protection alerted police that eight packages had arrived on the East Coast from Germany and were bound for an apartment with a Nebraska address. The packages reportedly contained over 1,000 Ecstasy pills. Police took one package to the apartment address, but because no one answered the intercom, they took the package to the apartment manager’s office. When one of the occupants of the apartment came to pick up the package, police arrested him.
During a subsequent search of the apartment, investigators reportedly found marijuana, almost 200 hits of LSD, several scales and over $1,000. The 22-year-old man and his roommate were arrested and charged with intent to deliver Ecstasy. They were released on $10,000 bond.
When Nebraska police place someone under arrest, there may be a great deal at stake. No matter the charges, it is important that the person accused of a crime knows his or her rights.
