Many people may not think of a rural town in Nebraska when they think of drug crime. However, it seems that criminal activity involving the distribution of drugs is infiltrating even the most iconic areas of the country. Nevertheless, when a small-town high school student faces drug charges, it is understandable that families and law enforcement would be concerned.
Residents of a tiny Nebraska community were in disbelief when they heard the report that a 16-year-old high school student had been arrested for selling LSD at the school. The chief deputy of the county sheriff’s office said he had never seen LSD in the high school in his 21 years in law enforcement. Most shocking to the community is that the drugs were allegedly sold to students as young as 14.
Four students were arrested for possession of LSD, and a 15-year-old was also cited for aiding and abetting the 16-year-old who was charged with selling the drugs to his classmates. The charges against the 16-year-old include possession, delivery of narcotics and distributing drugs within 1,000 feet of a school. The policy of high schools in this Nebraska district is to expel students who are involved in dealing drugs.
Any parents of a child this young who is facing drug charges may feel unsure of where they can turn for help. In addition to the penalties a conviction may bring, a youth may experience other consequences that could follow him or her for many years, such as the loss of educational and employment opportunities. Having a strong legal defense may result in reduced charges or other more positive outcomes.
