Before and while operating a motorized vehicle, most Nebraska drivers follow safe practices. Among others, these practices include ensuring proper maintenance of the vehicle, checking that all occupants are wearing seat belts, and avoiding alcohol and drugs that may impair judgment. However, not all drivers cover all these bases all the time. Drunk driving, in particular, is still a problem, despite continual warnings in the media about the dangers of driving under the influence.

In a recent example, a Kearney woman faces several serious charges following an accident last fall in which she survived but three of her passengers died. The accident happened when, according to court records, the 20-year-old woman driving southbound approached an intersection in central Nebraska and ran the stop sign. Her vehicle collided with an east-bound vehicle. The 37-year-old driver of the other vehicle was examined at the scene, but did not require hospitalization. Three of the occupants in the first vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene, and a fourth occupant was taken to hospital with injuries.

Reportedly, the driver of the first vehicle was tested and shown to have a blood alcohol content of .104. As well, according to court records, authorities found an open container of alcohol and drug paraphernalia at the accident scene. The records indicate that this woman now faces three counts of felony motor vehicle homicide, among other charges. She could spend up to 63 years in prison.

It appears this young woman may have made a grave error in judgment, and she is likely now feeling overwhelmed by the very serious charges she must face. Fortunately, experienced criminal defense attorneys are available to help this woman and others like her. Such a professional can guide people facing drunk driving and other criminal charges through the Nebraska legal system, assisting them in understanding their rights and responding appropriately.
