When facing the news of the unexpected loss of a loved one, a person might react irrationally. This fact — including that someone may react physically after learning of the death of their partner — is likely not a surprise to most people. However, a man in Nebraska is now charged with assault on the responders at the scene of the death of his girlfriend.

The incident that led to the man’s arrest reportedly happened on a day in late August. According to reports, rescue workers responded to the scene of a gunshot victim. The woman died, apparently as a result of the gunshot wound.

Emergency responders claim that they were confronted by the woman’s 52-year-old live-in boyfriend, who is also a police officer. Reports claim that the man swung — and missed — at firefighters. However, he is accused of striking an officer who was attempting to calm him down. The man has not been charged in connection with the woman’s death. Many of the details leading up to the alleged assault are unclear, but the woman’s death remains under investigation.

The combination of the sudden loss of a loved one and the prospect of responding to assault charges is likely overwhelming, even for those people who may have some familiarity with the criminal justice system. As such, most people in Nebraska who are facing criminal charges want an experienced criminal defense attorney on their side. Such a professional can guide them through the process, helping them make the decisions that will likely have a significant impact on the rest of their lives.
